FAMILY MEDIATION: Divorce and Separation

Family Mediation offers a sensible approach to resolving disputes between separating or already separated couples, whether married or not. Mediators can provide assistance in a safe and confidential environment. They are impartial and help resolve issues such as living arrangements, contact with children, finance and property matters.

The Benefits of Family Mediation:

When relationships break down it is often difficult for couples to talk to each other and mediation can help them reach agreement on practical arrangements regarding the future.

What we do:

Our mediators meet with both parties and discuss their concerns and help them reach mutual decisions, such as future plans for the children, housing and finance. Discussions take place in a confidential, safe and unbiased environment and focus on achieving the best outcome for all concerned. Both parties will be encouraged to contribute equally to the discussions and the mediator will remain impartial throughout. Areas of progress will be summarised regularly and any agreements will be recorded so that the couple can see the progress they have made.

We routinely offer parents the opportunity for their children to be seen in mediation. Research shows that children want their voice to be heard about future arrangements at the time of parental separation. Children from the age of 7 or 8 upwards can talk with a mediator in confidence and separately from their parents to share their thoughts and concerns. They choose what, if anything, is reported back to their parents. Children are only invited to speak to your mediator if both parents agree to it. We are very clear that children are under no obligation to take up the invitation, although we usually find that they welcome it. This is generally a one off appointment for which there is no charge.

What will it cost?

Please contact the office for our current charges. The service is free to those eligible for Public Funding.
